Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts

Houston Independent School District’s (HISD) High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) is a unique magnet school dedicated to giving talented students in the disciplines of creative writing, dance, music, theatre and visual arts the opportunity to develop their academic and creative potential.

In 2012, HISD received substantial funding through a bond election to build a new HSPVA campus in downtown Houston. Construction began in February 2016 with the understanding that additional funding would be required to bring this 21st century facility to fruition.

In October 2016, Kinder Foundation made a lead grant of $7.5 million toward a $10 million capital campaign led by HSPVA Friends—the nonprofit dedicated to raising funds for HSPVA—to ensure students receive the best arts education in a state-of-the-art facility. In recognition of the donation, and with approval by the HISD Board of Trustees, the new downtown school was named Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.

The building “topped out” in May 2017 and Kinder HSPVA opened to faculty and students in January 2019. Students, alumni and supporters celebrated the grand opening with a celebration and ribbon cutting on Feb. 4, 2019.

Information on page is current as of March 26, 2025. Lifetime gift total of $8,014,427 may include other gifts not mentioned above.
